The FAA has published a GPS coordinate of the center of their search area. They issued a no-fly zone 9 miles in radius of this location. It's likely that this is the location where the items were discovered. The plane was apparently discovered 1/4 of a mile from this location.
Have a look in
Google Maps.

You might want to fix your google maps link.
Thanks for catching the broken link. Stay tuned for more info about Steve Fossett as it becomes available.
created a map with the earlier search areas and the new exclusion zone:

fantastic Krin. This new map is really helpful. If anyone has any info on the exact location of the plane, we'd be delighted to have it.
It looks like the center of the exclusion zone is the spot where the aircraft was found. The Madera county sheriff released a topo today and it matches up almost perfectly.

It's worth taking note that if you draw a straight line down the runway he took off from you end up within a mile of the crash site.
It almost looks like he climbed to about 10,000 feet and passed out.
found an exact match using usgs maps.

updated my map with locations of items on the sherrif's map.
BTW...
The plane wreckage was within 2 miles of the straight line flight path downrange almost exactly 65 miles from his liftoff airport. And spotted at 3000 feet.
If I read the specs right, a Super Decathlon flying just above it's takeoff speed would take about an hour to reach that location.
Wow that's interesting. The Google Earth shows the wreckage on the SW side of the ridge line but the location might be a bit off. Just a few hundred feet would put it on the east side of the ridge. We'll still have to get more accuracy I think.
Thanks for all of your help!
