How to hack YouTube to watch the Olympics

Olympics on You Tube

Update: YouTube seems to have blocked the videos streaming into this site.

Being TV free is mostly an excellent commercial-free way of life. I have no idea how I had the time to watch TV before but sometimes I really miss it. For instance, right now. I usually use my home laptop to watch stuff when I need to but NBC has really locked things down for the Olympics. They have a web site where you can watch some videos but everything is time shifted and because they're using Silverlight, instead of Flash, there is no full screen option. The quality is not that hot either.

Anyway, some kind people out there have figured out a hack that I want so share.

Follow these steps to hack into the Olympics Youtube channel. Some people are saying that this channel is showing live events but since everyone is asleep over there at the moment, we'll wait to see if this is the case.
  1. Launch Firefox
  2. Go to http://www.youtube.com
  3. Go to the Tools Menu in Firefox
  4. Select Options
  5. Select the Privacy Tab
  6. Press the Show Cookies button
  7. enter youtube in the search box
  8. Look for cookies named GEO.
  9. Delete any cookie named GEO (there can be 2 of them).
  10. Copy all the lines of this URL:
    javascript:alert(document.cookie=
    "GEO=bb84fb3cd7df0311bb5026df4d6b524fcxkAAABLUixubyByZWdpb24sc2VvdWwsLCwsLC0x;
    path=/;domain=.youtube.com");
  11. Make sure you have http://www.youtube.com open and then paste the URL above into your address bar.
  12. An alert will come up, ignore it and press OK.
  13. enter http://www.youtube.com/beijing2008 into the address bar.
Your In!

Welcome to the Non-USA Beijing 2008 Olympics Page.

The nbc site, http://nbcolympics.com is now showing some live events. They're not showing everything. The quality is higher than it was in demos yesterday, though there is still no full screen option.

It's annoying because you have to agree(lie) that you are a paid subscriber of cable TV to view the live streams (lame).

Stay tuned for more ways to watch without a TV....

It may work in the US, but it certainly does not work abroad.
